History
In 1987 the Literacy Council was formed and began promoting literacy for adults in the Burnet County area. High School Equivalency (GED) and ESL (English-as-a-second-language) classes were held in Marble Falls, and GED evening classes were held in Burnet. As the program developed, ESL classes were added in Burnet and Granite Shoals, as well as a daytime High School Equivalency (GED) class in Burnet. To provide for these additional classes our first annual fundraiser, the Rubber Ducky Race for Literacy was initiated in April 2005. Our community support was heartwarming and provided the needed funds to continue our growing programs. Also in 2005, our Council elected to change our name to Literacy Council of the Highland Lakes, placing the emphasis on literacy and better reflecting the community we serve. We have since shortened our name to Literacy Highland Lakes.

We receive our funding from private foundations, corporations, businesses, organizations, and individuals who believe in what we do and share our vision of promoting literacy. Literacy Highland Lakes is very thankful for the growing support of so many individuals, businesses, foundations, and groups.
